Yu Hua worked with Yimou Zhang to turn Huozhe into a movie. Huozhe (the movie), which premiered in 1994 (also under the titles Lifetimes, Living, To Live, Woot jeuk). It won the Best Actor award for Ge You's portrayal of Fugui at the 1994 Cannes Fim Festival.
